Scrutiny:
Favret, 2011, There are a variety of spellings of Daktulosphaira and Dactylosphaera, with any combination of c/k, u/y, and ae/ai. There has also been disagreement as to the type species of the genus (e.g., Russell 1975, Eastop & Hille Ris Lambers 1976). Until the matter is resolved, possibly by a ruling from the ICZN, Dactylosphaera Shimer 1867 and Daktulosphaira Shimer 1866 are here considered different names with Dactylosphaera globosum Shimer 1867 and Pemphigus vitifoliae Fitch 1851 their type species, respectively.
Favret, 2011, Shimer described Dactylosphaera and clearly placed D. globosum in it. He also listed Pemphigus vitifoliae Fitch as possibly belonging to Dactylosphaera (i.e., "Dactylosphaera ? vitifoliae"), but also suggested Viteus as a possible alternate genus name for the Fitch species. Based on this text, since D. vitifoliae, with its uncertain placement, cannot be the type species, D. globosum is here listed as type species by monotypy.
Favret, 2011, See also Dactylosphaera, incorrect spelling of Daktulosphaira Shimer 1866: http://aphid.speciesfile.org/Common/basic/Taxa.aspx?TaxonNameID=11953
Type species:
Dactylosphaera globosum
Shimer (=
Phylloxera globosa globosa
), by original monotypy
The first family-group name based on this genus is Dactylosphaeridae Shimer, 1867.
